Romeo & Juliet graffiti lettering by Kevin Dresser for the Classical Theatre of Harlem

The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s presentation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is set on the blocks of New York City’s Harlem neighborhood. A soundtrack of rap, rhythm and blues, and soul music along with urban fashions called for a compatible graphic identity.

Kevin Dresser’s graffiti lettering sets the tone for this street-style play. This calligraphic logo contains both subtle and obvious hints referencing gender. Romeo’s ‘R’ contains a swooping arrow-shaped ending referencing the male gender symbol. While, Juliet’s ‘T’ joins with the ‘O’ in Romeo to create a female gender symbol.
