2018

The term STEM as an acronym for science, technology, and math was first used in 2001 by the U.S. National Science Foundation. Founded in 2018, inSTEMact is a non-profit institution that offers both STEM tutoring for students and coaching for professors. Our design embraces math by creating a unique logomark using a formula based on the Fibonacci sequence of numbers. The spiral composition uses the dot of the lowercase letter ‘i’ in the logotype as the visual starting point. The numerical sequence extrapolates the base circle into a series of six circles that enlarge and rotate using the Fibonacci sequence’s rising numerical order.

Our custom sans serif lettering is designed to feel friendly by using a rounded dot on the letter ‘i’ as opposed to a square. This typographic detail is what sparked the vision of using a math equation to create the original mark. Also, we wanted to add human touches within the lettering to compliment the analytical spiral circles. For instance, the capital ‘T’ curves at the base of the vertical stem and the center of the capital ‘M’ rises above the baseline to create an overall inviting logo.
